On Earth Day, the launch of new projects by YOOXYGEN, YOOX’s socially and environmentally responsible destination.
YOOX has long supported charitable initiatives around the globe, particularly with YOOXYGEN, which has since 2009 led the way in eco-commerce with projects aimed at raising awareness towards responsible choices in fashion, supported by the nice slogan “Be Cool, Be Conscious”. Yooxygen Brands (including Edun, Maiyet) combine style with a “careful production philosophy, allowing customers more ethically shopping” as per Yooxygen. Each collection is expected to reflect one or more of the sustainability values defined together with Parsons School of Design.
“Supporting conscious fashion is an innate characteristic of YOOXYGEN, which debuted online exactly eight years ago from a forward-thinking idea of our founder, Federico Marchetti, who has helped us understand that we can all make a difference. Today, we are proud to launch this new initiative that could contribute to the safeguard of the Great Barrier Reef, together with trusted partners such as We Are Handsome and Great Barrier Reef Foundation, who share the same values and enthusiasm towards the cause.” Miguel Ares, EVP Marketing YOOX
On Earth Day, the world’s leading online lifestyle store for fashion, design, and art, joined forces with Australian label We Are Handsome and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation to present YOOX Loves the Reef, a charity swimwear capsule collection aimed at supporting the preservation and restoration of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, one of the world’s Seven Natural Wonders.
YOOX selected the Australian label, We Are Handsome, for their distinct Australian aesthetic and vibrant approach to swim and activewear. The label’s design duo, Jeremy and Katinka Somers, drew inspiration from the Great Barrier Reef’s ecosystem to shape this six-piece capsule collection, featuring two one-piece styles, two bikinis, leggings and a tee in an exclusive print that celebrates the natural beauty of the Reef.
Proceeds from the sale of the collection will benefit the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, the lead charity for the Great Barrier Reef, funding solutions through science, technology, engineering and on-ground action to ensure its long-term conservation. In particular, proceeds raised through the partnership will be directed towards responding to bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef.
On a personal note, we are a bit deceived regarding the raw material choices of Yoox Loves the Reef collection. While being transparently revealed, the luxury swimwear capsule collection is made of “80% polyester and 20% Elastane (LYCRA), Made in China – certified by WRAP Worldwide and awarded the gold standard in 12 categories for compliance with laws and workplace regulations – among which prohibition of Forced and Child Labor” as stated in the pieces’ product description.
Even being a high-end collection, consistency in the “responsible concept of purpose” of this swimwear collection would have been welcomed from our viewpoint. With today’s opportunity to source quality nylons and polyesters made from recycled synthetics or created out of ocean waste and having available bio-based versions of elastane by leading elastane producers; the choice of raw materials could have been greatly fine-tuned and be far more responsible. If by any case the materials used for this capsule are of recycled or bio-based origin, it would have made “consistent sense” to specify. Charity is great, yet more conscious, responsible and transparent charity is just better. (Open for comment!)
This being said, always April 22nd, 2017, YOOX launched another partnership with The New School’s Parsons School of Design to promote sustainable fashion practices through education and collaborations.
“This Parsons’ collaboration signals YOOX’s growing commitment to encourage responsible choices in fashion and will allow YOOX to strengthen and develop the YOOXYGEN area – which debuted online on Earth Day in 2009. The partnership also establishes the YOOXYGEN Award, to be presented to a graduating BFA Fashion Design student of Parsons School of Design during its 69th Annual Benefit on May 22, 2017. The award will consist of a six-month internship at the YOOX Headquarters in Milan, beginning in July 2017, and the creation of a sustainable Spring/Summer womenswear collection under the graduate’s signature. The collection will be promoted and exclusively available on YOOX in January 2018.” states Yoox press release.
“When YOOXYGEN debuted online, we were amongst the first to acknowledge the importance of responsible choices in fashion. Today, we take a step further: our partnership with Parsons combines our commitment towards education and our desire to encourage sustainable fashion choices. We are convinced that the next generations of talents will drive a more sustainable fashion agenda and we feel it is our responsibility to empower them.” Federico Marchetti, Founder of YOOX and CEO of YOOX NET-A-PORTER GROUP.
